Today's LinkedIN Post from Raef

Today's post on LinkedIN by Raef compared financial accounting and managerial costing. It got me thinking about something a colleague said to me many years ago, as professor's we are the guardians, the gatekeepers, of our discipline. I do think that's a good way to look at being a professor. One of our roles is to ensure those entering our discipline are equipped and qualified to begin that journey. Still, implicit in that concept is that we have a good grasp on what constitutes our discipline. I'm not so sure we have that grasp in accounting, especially on the managerial side of it. We use so many names and some try to separate it into fragments: managerial costing, cost accounting, managerial accounting, financial planning and analysis, business/financial analytics, corporate finance, etc.

Are these all aspects of a larger discipline? Are they truly separate? What are the bounds of our discipline?
